Let me start this week off by saying Happy Father’s Day. It some times feels like us men do not receive the appreciation or admiration that the women receive, perhaps it should be that way? After all, men are looked upon for protection, strength, and their firm stance when challenged with obstacles.
It is because of these qualities that men will continue to be viewed differently. Rather than pointing out these differences out, maybe we should embrace them so when our children see us they will know how to respond to the cruelties of internet trolls and bullies in the school. Just some thoughts to consider this Father’s Day weekend, also I hope you all have a fun Juneteenth weekend too.
Killer Mike – Michael
Earlier this week, news broke that Hip Hop has not broken the number 1 billboard spot. Whether it is due to a lack of genre fatigue, stagnation, or not enough party records, I think hip hop is in a great spot. Especially when you consider we have rappers that can rap. Insert Killer Mike and his new album Michael that dropped today, you best believe we have plenty of rapping.
Michael is Killer Mike’s first solo album since R.A.P. Music that dropped 11 years ago. Though that is a long hiatus for an artist, keep in mind that Mike teamed up with El-P to form the duo Run The Jewels of which that has dropped four projects spanning from 2013-2020.
Killer Mikes latest offering is 14 tracks long coming in around 1 hour worth of music. Guest features on the project include Andre 3000, Future, Eryn Allen Kane, 2 Chainz, Curren$y, Ty Dolla $ign, Mozzy, Blxst, Jagged Edge, Cee Lo Green, Fabo, Kaash Paige, and El-P. Michael may be the best hip hop album this year and I highly recommend you listen to this from start to finish.
Hit Boy x Big Hit – Surf or Drown 2
Hit Boy has re-upped for the second installment of Surf or Drown 2. Enlisting his father who goes by Big Hit as his collaborator for his latest project. This is the first time in rap that a father and son duo have recorded a studio album together. Just in time for Father’s Day, the 20 song project features Big Sean, Dom Kennedy, and Garren. Surf or Drown 2 is full of banging beats and my favorite songs on the project include “Grindin’ My Whole Life, Pt. 2,” “Monte Carlo,” and “Sunrise.”
Rockwell Knuckles – Granny’s Couch
We have been waiting for one of our favorite emcees to drop again and what a doozy of a record he dropped on us this week. Granny’s Couch is the first single off of Rockwell Knuckles’s upcoming Raytown project. Granny’s Couch features Indiana Rome and is produced by Trifeckta. Rockwell Knuckles posseses one of the best flows in Hip Hop. Granny’s Couch is available on all streamers and you better stay tuned for Raytown because it is going to be one of the best albums out this year!
Gunna – a Gift & a Curse
Gunna released his new project a Gift & a Curse today. Though Gunna has been through his share a troubles earlier this year it seems that he is focused on delivering music for his fans. The project list 15 tracks and no guest features and focuses on his current situation. My picks from this album include “Bread & Butter,” “Idk nomore,” and “Born Rich.”
