Thoughts on BHM

First of all, let me say happy Black History Month! Much respect goes to Dr. Carter G. Woodson who started this great tradition as Black History Week in 1926 and later expanded to Black History Month in 1976. This celebration has inspired my thirst for Black history and the significance of why it is so important.

As Cool Breeze once said, “See in the third grade this is what you told, that you was bought, you was sold”. Those lyrics uttered in Goodie Mob’s “Dirty South” song inspired me to pick up books and learn about black inventors, scientists, writers, and musicians. It also reminded me that we must take a more equitable approach to our history by telling the accurate and full story of Black history in America.

It is clear the intention of Dr. Woodson was that we celebrate our achievements However, as we learn more about our contributions to society. I think it is increasingly important to examine the systemic issues that arose from these achievements.
