On December 14th before the NBC viewing audience of millions got to watch Girl Named Todd take home The Voice trophy, they were treated to two episodes of the Echo Kellum and Nicole Byer led new sitcom Grand Crew.

Synopsis

Some friends always find the humor in career moves, dating drama and more as they live their best lives as young Black professionals in LA. The crew consists of Noah, a hopeless romantic in too much of a hurry to settle down; his sister Nicky, who lives her life to the fullest; Sherm, an unexpected genius who plays the dating odds; Anthony, a finance guy who’s all about his career; and Wyatt, who’s happy to be married and out of the dating scene. No matter how chaotic life gets, they always make time to hang out at their favorite bar for good laughs and great wine.

The DELUX View

Grand Crew is a winner. It is exceptionally written and is something new and different in some respects for television audiences to enjoy. Garret Morris’s supposition in the pilot episode displays brilliantly the concept of the show. Black people are complexed, have emotion, and intellect that often goes unseen in media. It’s not a black F•R•I•E•N•D•S but it is a show about people who you’d want to be your black friends. Who couldn’t use more black friends, right? We’re great!

As much as i enjoyed the first two episodes I do believe, Phil Augusta Jackson, the creator of Grand Crew does have his work cut out for him. Depicting black folks can be a challenge because we are quick to call something “corny” due to not existing or seeing ourselves in certain spaces. White audiences tend to run from topics that may encroach on their quasi American ideals, but perhaps there is a middle ground where we all can come together and see ourselves in what’s being shown and laugh over a good glass of wine like the Grand Crew does.

Reasons to Watch

This show is executive produced by Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor who are veterans in the zany comedy space with their work on Brooklyn Nine Nine. It is sure to be a zillion laughs in this show. The other reason to watch would have to be Nicole Byer. I was introduced to this beautiful Sister by my daughter who fell in love with Nicole on a Netflix program. In both episodes her beautiful smile and sexy take on her character, as well as her comedic acting chops was welcomed to see.
