On December 30, 2017, Erica Garner, daughter of the late Eric Garner passed away. As an activist for social justice, Erica’s voice became a part of the many movements pushing for police accountability and policy reform after the tragic loss of her father. In 2014, Eric Garner died a victim of police brutality after being stopped for selling untaxed cigarettes. His death was ruled a homicide. The city did payout a $6 million civil settlement in lieu of no indictment being made.

Garner’s last words, “I can’t breathe,” became a slogan for activists. Pushing for social and political change, the young activist stood behind Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries. Garner was also extremely vocal about NYC Mayor, Bill de Blasios policing policies.

After going into cardiac arrest, she suffered major brain damage. According to Garner’s mother, she learned of her heart conditions during her pregnancy.

Erica Garner passed away at 27-years-old and leaves behind her mother and only son. Already leaving her footprint on history, Erica was a remarkable woman who was trying to make the world a better place.

After hearing the news, Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted his condolences to the family.

“I had the honor of getting to know Erica and I was inspired by the commitment she made working towards a more just world for her children and future generations. She was a fighter for justice and will not be forgotten.”

Rest in Peace, Erica Garner.
