Summer in St. Louis officially begins when the lights come up at The Muny.

On Monday, June 15, The Muny launches its highly anticipated Season 108 with the return of Hairspray, a beloved Broadway hit making its first appearance on the Forest Park stage since 2015. Presented by Emerson, the production runs June 15–21 and kicks off another season of world-class entertainment at America’s largest and oldest outdoor musical theatre.

For generations of St. Louis families, opening night at The Muny has been more than a performance. It is a tradition that marks the beginning of summer, bringing together audiences from across the region for unforgettable evenings under the stars.

Hairspray Returns by Popular Demand

One of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenager determined to dance her way onto television while challenging social barriers and promoting inclusion in 1960s Baltimore.

Known for its infectious music, high-energy choreography, and uplifting message, the show has remained a fan favorite since winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The Muny’s production promises to deliver the same joy, humor, and heart that have made Hairspray a beloved classic for audiences of all ages.

Performances begin nightly at 8:15 p.m.

Opening Night Starts Before the Curtain Rises

While the main event begins in the evening, guests are encouraged to arrive early and enjoy The Muny’s popular Preshow Festival.

Beginning at 6:45 p.m., the campus comes alive with live music and performances across multiple stages, creating a festival atmosphere throughout the grounds.

Opening night entertainment includes:

  • Muny Teens at Broadhurst Pavilion
  • Big Day Events DJ on the Ken Page Stage at Kooyumjian Family Plaza
  • Safiya Austin-El on the Staenberg Stage at Purina Plaza
  • Ben Iken and Owen Hanford on the East Stage at Steward Family Plaza

The preshow experience has become a favorite tradition for many theatergoers, offering opportunities to explore the campus, enjoy local entertainment, and soak in the excitement before the performance begins.

Perfect Weather for Opening Night

Opening night conditions are expected to be ideal for outdoor theater.

Forecasts call for temperatures around 70 degrees at curtain time, providing a comfortable setting for audiences gathering in Forest Park. Combined with The Muny’s signature silent overhead fans, guests can expect a pleasant evening throughout the performance.

The unique outdoor setting remains one of the venue’s most cherished features, allowing audiences to experience Broadway-caliber productions in one of St. Louis’ most iconic locations.
