MATI 2026 Hits Its Stride: Killer Mike and Big Freedia Electrify Saturday Before Sunday’s Grand Finale

The energy at Music at the Intersection (MATI) 2026 reached another level Saturday as thousands packed the Grand Center Arts District for one of the festival’s most anticipated days. From socially conscious hip-hop to New Orleans bounce and world-class musicianship, Saturday showcased exactly why MATI has become one of the country’s premier celebrations of Black music, culture and creativity. 

After an exciting opening day that featured standout performances across multiple stages—including Delux Magazine’s partnership with the MATI x Delux presents Mannie Fresh event—Saturday continued the momentum with an impressive mix of national headliners and hometown favorites.

Killer Mike Delivered a Powerful Headlining Performance

Few artists command a stage like Killer Mike.

Closing out Saturday’s programming at The Big Top, the Grammy Award-winning rapper brought his signature blend of lyrical excellence, Southern hip-hop, political commentary and undeniable stage presence. His performance reminded fans why he remains one of the most respected voices in music today.

Whether delivering hard-hitting verses or speaking directly to the audience between songs, Killer Mike created more than a concert—it became a shared experience rooted in authenticity, purpose and celebration.

Big Freedia Brought the Party

Earlier in the evening, Big Freedia transformed the festival into a New Orleans-style celebration.

Known worldwide as the “Queen of Bounce,” Big Freedia had the crowd dancing from the opening beat, turning the Grand Center Arts District into one massive dance floor. High-energy choreography, booming bass and nonstop audience interaction made the performance one of Saturday’s biggest highlights.

It was another reminder that MATI isn’t confined to one genre. The festival seamlessly moves between hip-hop, R&B, jazz, funk, soul, bounce, rock and global sounds—all while celebrating the artists and communities that continue to shape American music.

Music Everywhere You Turned

Saturday’s schedule offered something for every music fan.

Festivalgoers bounced between performances by LA LOM, The James Hunter Six, The Motet Plays Jamiroquai, Josiah Burton, BLVCK SPVDE & Friends, Miles Jam, local DJs, community activations and the free Washington Avenue block party.

One of MATI’s biggest strengths continues to be its ability to introduce audiences to emerging artists while placing them alongside internationally recognized performers.

Sunday’s Finale Promises a Strong Finish

The final day of MATI 2026 shifts much of the spotlight to The Fabulous Fox Theatre, where an all-star lineup is set to close out the weekend.

Sunday’s featured performances include:

• DJ Sinamin & Agile One in the Fox lobby
• Keyon Harrold with special guest Andra Day, joined by Chris Dave, Peter Martin, Shedrick Mitchell and Agile One
• PJ Morton
• Wyclef Jean, closing out MATI 2026 with one of the festival’s most anticipated performances.
