Who remembers the songs “You,” “Hey Young Girl,” “Girls Around the World” and the classic hit “Get It Shawty?”

If you do, awesome! If not, YouTube is your friend. The artist is Lloyd, and he is perhaps one of the most underrated R&B singers of our generation. Lloyd, who grew up in Atlanta, first gained notoriety in 2003 when he signed with Irv Gotti’s record label, The Inc. The next year, he released his debut album, Southside. From then on, he has released a string of hits, solidifying himself as the next big thing in R&B. After his last studio album, King of Hearts, he released a couple of songs here and there, but with not as much success as his earliest singles. He even released his first mixtape, The Playboy Diaries Vol. 1 in 2012. He is currently working on Vol.2.

Fast forward to about four years later. For those that have missed his velvety smooth voice, he is back with a new joint. Yes, he’s back! Lloyd talks about his absence from the game, which is documented in his latest single, “Tru.” In the beginning of the song, he talks about how he lost some friends and family and how he helped raise his sister’s child, but lost his own.

He sings:

This is me so please accept me for who I am
And please accept me for what I do
I’m just doing everything that I can
Cause all I wanna be is true
