It’s been six years since the sudden death of Whitney Houston and we’re still feeling the void her music has left. So much so, director Kevin MacDonald, along with her friends and family have taken on the task of giving fans a more intimate view into her life through an upcoming documentary.

In the soon to be film, a younger record producer and executive Clive Davis compares Houston’s success to that of Lena Horne and Dionne Warwick. “There was Lena Horne. There’s Dionne Warwick. But if the mantle is to pass to somebody who’s got an incredible range of talent with guts and soul, it would be Whitney Houston, in my opinion,” says Davis.

In 2015, a biopic was directed by Angela Bassett (Houston ‘s Waiting to Exhale co -tar) and aired on Lifetime. The mini-film gave fans a inside look at the star’s meteoric rise to fame and her turbulent marriage to the bad boy of R&B, Bobby Brown.

The official trailer, Whitney for the star’s documentary has been released. According to MacDonald, he and the film has received the full support of the icon’s family and estate as everyone worked together to ensure her legacy lives on.

For Oscar-winning filmmaker, Kevin MacDonald—he hopes to unravel the mystery behind “The Infamous Voice” in his through behind the scenes footage and unreleased recordings she filmed while offstage. 

“I approached Whitney’s life like a mystery story; why did someone with so much raw talent and beauty self-destruct so publicly and painfully? I was lucky enough to have the support of Pat Houston and the Whitney Houston estate in this quest. They entrusted me with the ‘keys to the vault’ while giving me complete freedom to follow the story wherever it went,” MacDonald said.

Whitney will debut at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival before making its way to theaters on July 6. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think!
