Michelle Anthony died on Tuesday in Baltimore of what the Nuggets called a pre-existing medical condition. She is survived by four children, the team said.
Denver’s star forward is not expected back in action until after Christmas according to the team. Denver plays Oklahoma City on Christmas Day. The Nuggets host Philadelphia the following night and Portland two days later and then travel to Minnesota on the 29th.
Anthony’s absence from practice for two days prior to this was unrelated to his sister’s death. Anthony has been dealing with an elbow strain.
The Nuggets put out an official statement regarding Carmelo’s sister.
“Our entire organization supports Carmelo during this difficult time for him and his family,” Nuggets executive vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said in a statement.
“It is heartbreaking news, particularly during the holiday season.”
