Delux: Tell us about your journey into dance. What first sparked your passion, and how did that early experience shape your career?
Demetrius: My journey into dance began with the immense support of my grandmother, who introduced me to dance at a young age. What first sparked my passion was the profound sense of wholeness and safety I felt whenever I danced; it was like being in my own bubble, isolated from the outside world. These early experiences not only fueled my passion but also laid the foundation for my career. Starting young allowed me to develop a deep respect for the discipline and the etiquette that dance demands, and that early dedication has shaped me into the artist I am today.

Delux: What does dance mean to you beyond performance — emotionally, mentally, and spiritually?
Demetrius: Beyond performance, dance is deeply meaningful on emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Emotionally, it helps me stay in tune with my individual self, allowing me to understand who I am and calming my brain, thoughts, and heart. Mentally, dance sharpens my focus, enhances cognitive abilities, and builds resilience. Spiritually, it connects me to something greater, providing a sense of purpose and inner peace.
Delux: How would you describe Saint Louis Dance Theatre to people who’ve never seen the company perform?
Demetrius: Saint Louis Dance Theater is a dynamic and innovative company, known for its strong sense of community among its 16 talented artists. Each member is not only an exceptional dancer but also a deeply inspiring human, blending technical excellence with emotional and spiritual depth. The company is committed to pushing boundaries and continually evolving the art form. In essence, Saint Louis Dance Theater is a vibrant ensemble of emerging artists who are as supportive as they are talented, making them a force to be reckoned with.
Delux: What has been the most transformative role or performance of your career so far, and why?
Demetrius: The most transformative role of my career so far has been performing with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for Music in Motion. This experience profoundly heightened my awareness of myself as an artist. It equipped me with invaluable tools and insights, and the inspiration I drew from the experience was immense. Performing for an audience that deeply respected the art form elevated my dancing to new heights, revealing capabilities I hadn’t known I possessed. The collaboration with live musicians, feeling the music resonate right behind me, and the synergy between dancers and musicians was truly transformative. It’s an experience that not only enriched my artistry but also deepened my love for the craft.
Delux: How do you prepare for a performance?
Demetrius: I prepare for a performance by immersing myself in mindfulness and music. Meditation helps center my mind, and listening to music allows me to enter a focused, introspective state. I also keep my body warm and maintain it as my instrument by stretching and strengthening beforehand. The gift of prayer is also integral; I always ask God to use me as a vessel and let others see Him through my performance. This combination of mental, spiritual, and physical preparation helps me deliver my best on stage.

Delux: How do you balance technique with emotional expression when you dance?
Demetrius: When it comes to balancing technique with emotional expression, I rely on my solid foundation and muscle memory. My technique is the bedrock that allows me to move confidently and precisely. At the same time, I let my emotions flow freely, trusting that the depth of my feelings will naturally enhance my movements. It’s this harmonious blend of discipline and genuine emotion that truly brings my dance to life.
Delux: What do you hope audiences take away after watching you perform?
Demetrius: I hope that after watching my performance, the audience walks away feeling truly transformed. I want them to experience a sense of liberation and inspiration, feeling whole and deeply moved. Above all, I want them to leave the theater with a sense of change, carrying with them emotions that resonate deeply and leaving with a renewed perspective, different from how they came in.
Delux: How has being part of the St. Louis arts community influenced your growth as a dancer and creative?
Demetrius: Being part of the St. Louis arts community has profoundly shaped my growth as both a dancer and a creative. The exposure to a broad spectrum of dance styles and techniques, far beyond what I encountered in my early years, has enriched my artistry. The diversity of genres and the constant inspiration from fellow artists have sparked my creativity and pushed me to explore new boundaries. Moreover, the supportive and collaborative spirit of the dance community here has been incredibly nurturing, fostering both personal and artistic development.
Delux: What advice would you give young dancers who dream of becoming a professional dancer?
Demetrius: My advice to young dancers aspiring to become professionals is to always stay true to who you are and maintain faith in your journey. Understand that growth is continuous, and you’ll always be evolving and relearning yourself. It’s important to remember that you won’t have it all figured out at once, and there will be ups and downs. But with dedication, consistent practice, and a resilient mindset, you’ll reach anything you strive for. Just keep believing in yourself and staying mentally strong throughout the journey.
Delux: What’s next for you — artistically, creatively, and personally?
Demetrius: Looking ahead, artistically, I’m focused on becoming more well-rounded in my craft, constantly refining and expanding my skills. Creatively, I’m excited to explore more choreographic opportunities and take on leadership roles in creating new work. Personally, I’m looking to venture into massage therapy and obtain my license, which will allow me to blend my passion for dance with holistic wellness. I also aspire to be a positive influence in others’ lives, continually inspiring and making a meaningful impact in the world.
