Black History Month Fashion Exhibit Celebrates Local Black Designers
On January 31, Black Creatives in the Lou™ partnered with Neiman Marcus St. Louis to launch a Black History Month fashion exhibit centering local Black designers, artists, and entrepreneurs inside one of the city’s most established luxury retail spaces. The theme encouraged guests to “be fashionable,” and St. Louis showed OUT!
The result? A sharply produced, well-attended showcase that brought more than 300 guests to the store and elevated St. Louis talent to the kind of visibility it deserves. The exhibition, now in its fourth year, remained on view through the end of February, amplifying the participating designers well beyond opening night.
If you’re not already familiar with this collective of incredibly talented people, Black Creatives in the Lou™, founded by Yolanda “Yoro” Newson, is a St. Louis-based creative collective that centers and showcases Black designers, artists, and culture creators. The annual Designer Showcase has become a marquee event during Black History Month in St. Louis, giving exposure, retail cred, and community support for a new class of creatives each year.
Dessert sponsors Apple of My Eye Sweet Treats and PudnPudn contributed to the evening’s deliciousness as a sweet reminder that supporting Black-owned businesses was in every detail.
A Moment for Tyler “Tai” Davis
The Creatives also gave a heart-touching tribute to Tyler “Tai” Davis, a beloved St. Louis musician, artist, chef, and model. His incredible, unprecedented multidisciplinary career highlights the extraordinary range of Black creative excellence in St. Louis. His work transcended categories of music, fashion, culinary, and visual expression, all kissed by his signature precision and presence.
The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell’s office issued an OFFICIAL proclamation, recognizing February 1 as Tyler “Tai” Davis Day in St. Louis, formally giving flowers to his cultural contributions to the city.
The proclamation grounded the evening in civic recognition for Tai Davis. The St. Louis artistic community will continue to honor his legacy, recognizing the impact of his creations and the standard of excellence he embodied.

Luxury, Legacy, and Local Talent
While the opening night drew the crowd, the real flex is that the exhibition lived inside Neiman Marcus St. Louis all month long, giving the work space to breathe, be seen, and be experienced beyond one evening.
Heading now toward its fifth year, Black Creatives in the Lou™ Designer Showcase keeps leveling up. Black artists and fashion designers in St. Louis have a sustained platform that is elevated and earned.
Under Yoro Newson’s incredible artistic leadership, the collective has built real credibility and undeniable momentum, expanding visibility for the city’s creative talent. Her unmistakable creative direction and curation help imprint this movement with range, reach, and staying power.
“Black Creatives in the Lou has been the wind beneath my wings. It gave me hope and a different perspective on what we can do and how far we can go as creatives here in St. Louis.”
— Aileen Woods, Eco Designer
In a retail climate where representation is discussed but inconsistently delivered, this partnership DELIVERED with presence on the floor, on the calendar, and in cultural conversation. It demonstrated intentional ecosystem-building, retail access, luxe institutional alignment, and meaningful visibility for Black designers and creatives in St. Louis.
Thank you to Neiman Marcus St. Louis for creating space with intention. Thank you to the artists and designers who continue to raise the bar. And HUGE kudos to Yoro Newson, whose vision, discipline, and belief in this city and our artists keep moving the culture forward.
